It sounds like a good idea to me. Of course, I don't have a job, but my dad really likes Sree and would probably be willing to help out a lot. I always said India was a horrible place, but everyone thought I was being racist or something. I'm a little concerned about the package being tampered with or lost, but tampering with mail is a serious crime. I'm sure we can do something if that happens.

This probably isn't the best place to make the announcement, though, since no many people will see it... we can call Caitlin, Lysa, Donna and whomever else was friends with Sree and see if they'll donate.

I try to give places I've never been the benefit of the doubt but the way Sree describes it, there's really nothing good about it. >.> They have pretty clothes and good food but that really doesn't seem to be making up for anything.

And I'm also a little concerned, especially if we can't put insurance on the laptop and something happens to it. But I think we could just wrap it up in a lot of bubble wrap...we can throw in a few other things too. Maybe we can even record a DVD for her chronicling everything that's been happening here too. We have a little while...I'd want it to reach her a little before Christmas. I need to get a job, at least for Christmas...

Yea, this is just a general place to put it out there as an idea. I don't know how much I'd depend on Donna for anything like this, but we'll see.

I saw in my parent's hometown some guy was selling $75 to $95 dollar laptops that at least have XP on them so they're not too bad...

This is a great idea! I would love to chip in and help her get a laptop. A good laptop is much more than $100, but we can definitely research it. Does she have internet access where she is other than the cafe? (Like, dial-up I suppose? Does she have money for that?)

But that sounds so bad. No wonder she didn't want to go back. Though, her parents are higher class, so maybe she hasn't had this bad of an experience. I need to be reminded again of why she chose to go back, and to choose going there?? Maybe we should pitch in to pay for getting her out of there. Unless she wants to stick it out. Shocked

It'd be sweet if we could get a video of all of us and such to help her through the bad stuff. Or anything else she wants, like a game for her laptop. I feel optimistic even though I'm not sure I can afford this (^_^; )

But if we do ship it over there, we have to probably pay for insurance to ship it and insurance for the laptop while she has it over there. Though she would have to ship it back to get it fixed or whatever.

She says that one other person in the hostel has a laptop so I'm sure they have something...well, a GOOD laptop is in the 600 to thousands and that's a bit steep. Searching ads like richmond.craigslist.com have turned up some interesting laptops. Also, ask around because seriously, a new laptop would be too much. I don't even use a brand new laptop.

See, that's just the thing. She didn't want to go back for reasons like friends and...driving. The way she made it seem, India was just a kind of crowded and that she'd have all these assumed freedoms and that she'd finally be away from her parents. But looking at it now, I wonder which is the larger evil, a filthy hostel or her mother's nagging. She just gave in though to her parent's wanting to go there.

And yea, when she did live there, it sounded like she lived pretty much in a palace and stuff so I'm not sure she saw any of the other aspects since she left when she was 6 or 7? But yea, I told her to flunk out but she was like, 'I can't, my dad's using a whole year's salary'. Not saying that she might have any control over it anyway...she said classes are difficult so you never know.

Well, the laptop alone should make her happy since she never played computer games anyway so we can just focus on the laptop and maybe some misc. items like...manga or something.

If we did happen to get a used one, I guess we can find some with insurance or purchase more if its expired. Definitely won't be a cheap endeavor...

We'll figure it out. I'd be easier if we did it all together, but I suppose for now we'll search on our own?

Yea, for now, look at deals, newspaper ads, cites selling things, trading posts, etc, post it here or show it if we ever all meet up again and we can go for there...there's actually one other little problem I'll have to figure out since it seems Sree only calls me...I have to get her address >.< I seriously hope we can send her stuff and they won't try to tamper or something dumb.

K, peeps, time to revive this.

Sree called me recently and told me her roommate has a laptop. Sounds like they're a bit stingy with it but she said she was on the net so that does give us the peace of mind that she can connect.

So next on the list would be to inform possible other participants, make a budget, and work on finding one. I am going to be looking for a job everywhere as soon as finals are over because we have almost a ridiculous amount of downtime.

Also, if she does happen to call one of you sometime, try to get her address as conspicuously as possible...I wanted to ask her parents but alas, they'd insist they send it and go through it or something...I'll probably talk to her again though.

Uh yea...who's for just writing letters and sending...pictures? ^^; Maybe when she comes home for the 6-month check-in we can give her a laptop.
