Zael wandered through the forests, watching the rain fall gently. He had been traveling for hours and was growing weary, he found. A little farther...

A village finally came into view and he sighed with relief, walking into what appeared to be a bar/inn.

The people inside stared at him as he walked in, the black haired man dressed rather nicely, or more elegant than what they were used to. He glared at them, his amethyst eyes cold and somber. He sat at a table and rested his face in his hands.

He woke up recently...he couldn't remember a thing. Terrific, he thought bitterly...

Briar belonged in a bar. The alcohol was quickly becoming her only refuge. After the break-up, she really didn't have the strength to resist the temptation. Her friends told her she was becoming an alcoholic, but that didn't matter to her. Her whole world had ended... more like broke up with her and left with some skank. Under her breath she grumbled over this quietly, with a slur. The people nearby seemed to ignore her or move away, but she really didn't care.

"Don't drink to drown your sorrow, sorrow knows how to swim."

"Being drunk is not how you solve your problems."

Blah blah blah. Her friends didn't understand how much she had loved him. And he didn't love her back. She needed to find someone else to relieve this pain. Someone not like her old boyfriend, someone who could buy her fancy things but was already a jerk. Not some misleadingly nice guy who ends up being an asshole. And not someone poor, someone who will buy her things and that's all she will be attached to. That way she won't get hurt, she thought.

The bar hushed a moment as the door opened. Briar actually paid attention and turned to look at who had entered. A businessman? The guy was sharply dressed. Briar was almost ashamed of her pink shirt and tight jeans, now. She couldn't keep her eyes off the man. Now that was a guy that will buy her things, and his amethyst glare was one you could distance yourself from. This must be fate.

If the new guy looked at her she was going to give him her best smile. She was turned around on the barstool, her red hair curled loosely around her face. She had dyed her hair red from natural blonde, which she had hated when people expected her to be stupid. Briar was definitely not stupid.

If he looked her way and seemed interested, she was going to approach him. This guy could perhaps get her out of this place, where everything reminded her of her ex. It wasn't a very big town, even though it bordered on being called a city, but she and her ex had gone everywhere together. Even though she hadn't met him, she expected much from the mystery man.

Zael stared at his wallet, which thankfully had been left with him when he was jumped...if he had been jumped. For all he knew, he'd just fallen from somewhere and bumped his head. It told him his name, his age, all the things important in life...

And yet, he still felt empty without any prior memories. Where was he fro? Who were his parents? Was he married? Who, really, was he?

He grimaced and pulled out money, the only thing he really remembered which was a bit disheartening, and looked up at the bartender, a bald man who didn't appear that old. He grumbed, rubbing his brow.

"Give me the strongest thing you have."

He remembered somehow that people drank away their memories...so if you didn't have any could you drink them back? Worth a try. And if not, at least he'd be drunk.

He glanced around the bar, nose wrinkling at the unsavory people. How did he get here? Just another question to add to many, he supposed, sighing briskly.

His eyes met another woman's briefly and he raised an eyebrow as she stared back. Oh great, this looked good. For all he knew, he was married with three kids and a dog somewhere out in the country. But he sighed...somehow though, looking at himself, he really doubted that. He blinked at her in a show of disinterest though he found her rather attractive. If he even thought about starting a relationship, he probably needed to answer that all important question...

Who was he?

When he didn't seem interested even with her brillant smile, she pouted. Perhaps it was the liquor that made her so bold, or it was how desperately lonely she was feeling for the past two weeks... But she stood up and sauntered over.

As Briar approached she studied him closely, and he seemed distressed over something. She definitely sympathized. It was decided.

The pretty woman sat down meekly in front of him. "Hey, I saw you and you seemed kind of down. Did your girlfriend break up with you or something?" she said with a sympathetic smile. She hoped she seemed mostly concerned and not hitting on him. The first week of coming to the bar guys had talked to her and most of them seemed like jerks trying to get laid and it had made her more irate than ever. Hopefully this guy wasn't going to be as "dissuasive" as she had been.

Zael stared up, the woman having crossed over to actually talk to him. Exasperating, really. He rubbed at his brow, shaking his head giving a bitter laugh.

"I wish it was that simple..."

Her concern was probably misplaced so that's all he offered. He didn't know much right now but he knew that people liked to take advantage. He must've looked pretty pathetic right about now. Taking a shot of whatever the bartender had given him, he grimaced as the hard acid hit his stomach hard, numbing his skull. Slamming the small glass down, he stared at her nonchalantly, asking briskly.

"And tell me...what do I owe the pleasure of your company?"
